GDP Monthly Estimate: January 2025

UK GDP fell by 0.1% in January

  • UK GDP fell by 0.1% in January 2025, following 0.4% growth in December 2024.
  • Real GDP grew by 0.2% in the three months to January, primarily due to growth in the services sector. 
  • Services output increased by 0.1% in January, after 0.4% growth in December 2024. Growth over the three months was driven by administrative and support services (+1.9%) and retail trade (+0.7%).
  • Accommodation and food services fell by 2.4% in January, reversing a 0.9% rise in the last month.
  • Consumer-facing services grew by 0.1% in January, with the largest contributions from retail trade (+1.7%) and rental and leasing activities (+3.0%).
  • The production sector declined by 0.9% in January, reversing 0.5% growth in December. The biggest drag came from manufacturing (-1.1%), particularly basic metals (-3.3%) and pharmaceuticals (-3.1%).
  • Construction output fell by 0.2% in January, following a similar 0.2% decline in December. Over the three months, construction grew by 0.4%, led by public sector new work (+9.3%).
  • GDP was 1.0% higher in January 2025 compared to January 2024, with services up 1.6%, production down 1.8%, and construction up 0.9%.
