ONS Monthly GDP July 2024

Key trends

  • UK GDP showed no growth in July 2024, following a flat performance in June 2024.
  • Real GDP grew by 0.5% in the three months to July 2024, with widespread growth in the services and construction sectors compared to the three months to April 2024.
  • Services output increased by 0.1% in July 2024, rebounding from a 0.1% decline in June. Growth over the three months was driven by information and communication (+0.8%) and retail trade (+0.5%).
  • Professional, scientific, and technical activities saw a decrease of 1.3% in July 2024, ending a five-month growth streak. Over the three months, this sector grew by 2.0%, primarily fuelled by legal and research activities.
  • Consumer-facing services grew by 0.1% in July 2024, with the largest contributions from retail trade (+1.2%) and sports and recreation activities (+4.2%).
  • The production sector experienced a decline of 0.8% in July 2024, reversing its 0.8% growth from June. The manufacturing subsector was hit hardest, with a 1.0% fall in output.
  • Construction output decreased by 0.4% in July, following a 0.5% rise in June. However, construction grew by 1.2% over the three months, with new work rising by 1.6%.
