Clothing & Footwear Sales
Clothing sales fell xx% YoY, while Footwear sales fell xx% YoY in October, according to the Retail Economics Retail Sales Index (value, non-seasonally adjusted).
Key sales drivers
Clothing & Footwear sales’ performance in October reflects several upside (+) and downside (-) factors including:
Later half term(+): The half term holiday fell a week later in 2024, encroaching into November and impacting year-on-year comparables.
Mild weather (-): Across most of the month, mild weather impacted seasonal clothing sales. Temperatures across the country were warmer than average for the time of year.
Storm Ashley (-): The Met Office warned of strong winds as Storm Ashley arrived in the middle month, having a dampening effect on footfall.
Consumer confidence drops (-): Consumer confidence fell to -xx in October (GfK), its lowest level since March, as speculation grew over the impact of the upcoming Budget at the end of October. The savings index increased to +xx, highlighting a focus on saving.
Energy price cap (-): Ofgem raised the energy price cap for October to December by xx%, leading to a rise in average energy bills of £xx a year. This helped push inflation higher and will lead to less disposable income for non-essential spend.
